Juravinski Cancer Centre

Built on the Niagara Escarpment overlooking the City of Hamilton, the Juravinski Cancer Centre serves more than 1.7 million people in the central west Ontario region and sees more than 7,000 new patients each year. As a regional referral centre, the JCC collaborates and coordinates with care providers in each patient's home community. In September 2014, the state-of-the-art CIBC Breast Assessment Centre opened at the JCC to provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary and leading-edge care in the diagnosis of breast cancer. The JCC is part of the Hamilton Health Sciences family.

The centre operates on a philosophy that combines high quality, evidence-based treatment, compassionate care, education and research. Researchers at the JCC, in partnership with McMaster University, are international leaders in this field, making significant contributions to the growing body of knowledge about cancer treatment and control around the world. As an academic health sciences centre, the JCC is actively involved in educating and mentoring the next generation of physicians, health professionals and researchers.Through the Escarpment Cancer Research Institute (ECRI) - a joint HHS and McMaster University research institute, cancer research is also conducted in the core areas of translational research, clinical trials, and quality of health care/knowledge translation by multidisciplinary teams.

Creating welcoming spaces and a healing environment is a priority at the JCC. The use of natural light, music and an extensive art collection contributes to the creation of a soothing environment for patients, their families, volunteers and staff. Another notable feature is the chemotherapy day care suite, which features an open fireplace and natural light. The centre also runs a “Music in the Courtyard” program, where volunteer musicians perform throughout the week to help create a supportive atmosphere for patients and their families. A Patient and Family Resource Centre, conveniently located in the main lobby, provides information and a quiet place for reading.
