Supportive Care

Supportive and Palliative Care Program

Supportive Care at the Juravinski Cancer Centre is part of the Supportive and Palliative Care Program within the Juravinski Cancer Program at Hamilton Health Sciences.

Supportive care is the set of services focused on meeting the emotional, physical, social and spiritual needs of cancer patients and their families. These services may be needed and accessed at any time, from the diagnosis of cancer through to the period of follow-up care.  Supportive care can help people who are living with cancer and those who are coping with bereavement.

Supportive Care services are available to all patients at the Juravinski Cancer Centre. Our professionals will work with you, your family and your primary health care team to help identify and respond to your supportive care needs.

Like many people facing cancer, you and your family may have questions or concerns about:

  • Your job and finances
  • Talking to your family and friends about your cancer
  • Accessing available community and government resources
  • Healthy eating
  • The pain or symptoms associated with your cancer and its treatment
  • Coping with weight loss or changes in your appetite
  • Feeling worried or sad
  • Your spiritual or religious needs
  • Helping young children understand what is happening
  • Managing day-to-day activities
  • Grief and bereavement
  • Understanding the health care system and how to access necessary resources

Dependent on your needs, you may meet one or more members of the Supportive Care team.

A referral to a Supportive Care professional can be arranged through your oncologist or primary nurse.  Dependent on your needs, a self-referral can also be made.  If you are not sure how to access a Supportive Care professional or wish to make a self-referral you can reach Supportive Care by calling the Centre at (905) 387-9711 ext. 64315 during the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
