Accessing our Cancer Treatment Services
You may need to travel for your cancer treatment. The cost of travel or finding a place to stay can be an added stress during this time. Here are some options available to you. A printable overview of this information can also be accessed by clicking here.
Canadian Cancer Society Transportation Service
The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) offers a transportation service for patients who:
•cannot afford the cost of travel, or
•not physically well enough to use public transportation,or
•feel uncomfortable facing travel alone.
Patients are picked up and taken to and from their appointments by a volunteer driver. While every effort is made to provide a ride to appointments, the CCS cannot guarantee that they can provide all ride requests.
New patients who register are asked to pay a one-time $100 registration fee. Children 18 years old or under will not be charged. The CCS needs 3 business days notice when requesting a volunteer driver. If you cannot afford to pay, there is a compassionate program in place to help you.
To learn more or register, call your community Canadian Cancer Society office or contact them at 1-888-939-3333.
A place to stay
Patients can stay overnight at the Durand Residence located at 10 Herkimer Street in Hamilton. http://www.durandresidence.com/
Staying at the Durand Residence:
The Juravinski Cancer Centre has a limited number of rooms for patients to stay overnight at the Durand Residence. These rooms are available only to patients receiving cancer treatment who are:
• independent in their daily care activities
• live greater than 50 kms from the Cancer Centre.
Priority for these rooms is given to our most vulnerable patients. Factors such as how far away you live, social supports and income are all considered. Patients can apply to CCS to arrange for transportation if they do not have a car.
The cost for the patient is covered only for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. There is $50 per night to stay Friday, Saturday, Sunday and holidays. A patient may have a family member or friend stay with them at a cost of $50/night.
Please ask a member of your cancer care team for more information.
Financial questions or concerns
Treatment for cancer can bring about many financial concerns. Social workers are available to help you and your family cope with these concerns. You can make an appointment with a social worker by asking a member of your cancer care team for a referral or call yourself and ask to meet with a social worker: 905-387-9495, ext 64315.
Benefits and medical expenses
Applying and being approved for benefits can take time so we suggest that you start right away. Some medical expenses, such as drug and travel costs, can be claimed on your income tax return.
